Training course in live kidney transplants

Twelve surgeons will be trained to perform live kidney transplants at the beginning of July. Erasmus MC is the only hospital in the world that offers this international training program.

The physicians come from Saudi Arabia, Great Britain, Australia, Germany, the Netherlands, Poland, Turkey, Belgium and the Czech Republic.

Largest

Transplant surgeon Dr. Frank Dor says: “We are the largest center in Europe performing live kidney transplants. In addition, we have the Skillslab, where bodies are kept and prepared in special way. This enables course participants to practice on human bodies rather than on animals, which is unique.”

Operating room

Lectures on various surgical techniques will be given to the physicians during the three-day training program. Participants will spend a large part of the day developing their skills in the operating room of the Skillslab.

International

Three operations on living donors will be performed on the third day, giving the course participants a chance to observe. Dor: “Patients love the idea of international professionals being able to follow the operation.”

Quick recovery

A lot of attention is paid to the quality and safety of the intervention, says Dor. “For live kidney transplants there is always one person who is not ill, but nevertheless ends up in the operating room. A safe operation with a quick recovery and minimal pain are of utmost importance to the donor.”

Assistance

The training program can help inspire the physicians present to use the live kidney donation technique learned in their own hospitals. Dor: “To this end, our experienced center offers assistance. For example, we are currently training a team from Georgia. And Macedonia will follow shortly.”

Hi ,do you have similar training for nurses?

    • Dorthe Slaats

      Hello Anne,
No, we don’t offer training for nurses at the moment. Maybe you can join ITNS (the international transplant nurses society) and connect with other transplant professionals.
