Anyone with normal renal function and anatomy can donate a kidney while they are alive. There are a number of conditions:
- You must be 18 years or older.
- You must be able to make the decision yourself: that is, you must be mentally competent.
- You must make the decision to donate voluntarily and free from any kind of pressure.
- You must not have any health problems that would make giving a kidney risky.
It is important for you to consider carefully whether you wish to be a living donor. If you would like to find out more about living donation – read more under ‘How do I choose to donate’.
