An Erasmus MC patient has for the seventh time received a kidney, thanks to a new transplant program. The 39-year-old teacher from Roosendaal (The Netherlands) set a world record with his seventh kidney transplant, and received an actual Guinness World Record certificate.

Kidney disease affects the entire family
Information campaign in the home setting of critically ill kidney patients is a success: a relative or friend is five times more likely to donate a kidney. The ‘Nierteam aan Huis’ (Home Renal Team) has visited a great number of kidney patients and their loved ones over the past years. Dr. Sohal Ismail received his PhD on 10 June on the effectiveness of this information campaign in the home setting.
1500th Living Kidney Donation
In May 2014 the Erasmus MC carried out the 1500th kidney transplantation with the kidney of a living donor.
Stem cells from fat of kidney patients suitable as immune suppressant
Stem cells from the adipose tissue of patients having to undergo a kidney transplant appear to be suitable for the manufacture of immunosuppressant drugs. In this way, kidney patients themselves are providing the ingredients for the drugs that will ensure that their donor kidney is not rejected. Other patients who have undergone an organ transplant can also make use of this treatment with stem cells from their own adipose tissue.
